Ice House Restaurant, Campbellville, Ontario

ice_house

The Ice House Restaurant is in Campbellville, Ontario on Guelph Line Road just south of the 401. The food is typical breakfast and lunch fare — bacon and eggs, burgers and fries. People come here for the bikes more than the cuisine.

For a few years, the Ice House has served as a meeting place for members of the local Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group chapter. Meetings happen on Sunday mornings in the summertime, but bikes of all kinds are coming and going most of the day. The town is surrounded by interesting roads that are sport bike haunts.

The food is reasonably priced and the service is friendly. My only beef has been that smoking is allowed in parts of the restaurant. When the weather permits, you always have the option of sitting outside to avoid it.

Aunt Catfish’s Restaurant, Port Orange, Florida

Port Orange, Florida is a few kilometres south of Daytona Beach on the I95. Aunt Catfish’s is on the Halifax River at the foot of the Port Orange bridge which crosses the river to Daytona Beach Shores. The Halifax River is the body of water that separates the long, sandy peninsula that contains Daytona Beach from the mainland. It eventually flows into the Atlantic a few klicks further south near Ponce Inlet. The river is a slow-moving affair that alternates between fresh and salt water according to the tides.

I ate at Aunt Catfish’s on my first trip to Bike Week in Daytona. If you love seafood like I do, this is the place to sample all sorts of things you can’t normally get: flounder, shark, catfish. You will also find lots of Southern specialties like “Georgia ice cream” (a blend of hot corn grits and grated cheese).

When we pulled into the parking lot, I noticed a dock behind the restaurant with a local fishing boat unloading. You can’t get much fresher than that.
